Project #4: Hello Hardware!

Our little church has been "updated" several times.  So a little downdating is in order!  One of the easiest places to start was replacing the old 1980s gold bulb doorknobs.

Thanks to our wonderful local architectural salvage, Second Use, we were able to easily find replacements that were salvaged from an old Seattle building built around the same time as our little church.  The new hardware required a bit of cleaning to remove old paint and grime.  Of course, we did our best not to destroy the wonderful patina that age created.  I used boiling water and baking soda for the most part.  I didn't get every speck of paint off because that old paint (from an entirely different building) is part of the hardware's history and now the history of this church.

The difference that hardware makes is pretty amazing.  And in the end, this change cost us around $200.  A great value for such a remarkable change.
