Toast in Bowl
Toast in Bowl
“Toast in Bowl” is a series of six 9” x 12” prints created using the reductive or elimination method of linocut. The process involves a number of color overprints made from a single piece of linoleum, with more of the linoleum being cut away for each overprinted color.
On this piece, the first parts carved out of the linoleum were what remains white on the print, and a light yellow was inked over the linoleum. Then the piece was run through the press, transferring the yellow ink to paper. Then the portions that remain yellow on the print (parts of the cat) were carved away and a light orange ink was applied over the linoleum. Then the paper was again run through the press, transferring the light orange ink onto the paper. This process was repeated several times in the following color order—yellow, light orange, dark orange, ending with the background color and the color black.
By the end of the reductive process, the linoleum is almost entirely carved away and no additional prints can be made.
“Toast in Bowl” has been displayed at Outstanding in its Field Gallery and Swiftwater Gallery on Vashon Island.
Toast is a Siberian Forest cat. She leaps giant cabinets. She taunts mice. And she loves to nap in nice deep bowls like the one in this print.
